It is interesting to see the very unsubtle creationist wording, "God made them that way" Looking at the history, earlier it was more subtle, simply "this design protects their brains from damage from the pressure of the water."

However, if we wished to be consistent about the Intelligent Design viewpoint, then we should remove the phrase, "their closest relatives are the boobies", because related species implies evolution.

Disclaimer: Certainly conservatives are generally more sympathetic to intelligent design than liberals. However, I'm conservative mainly because conservatives are less enthusiastic than liberals about murdering human babies. (I'd never get away with saying that on Wikipedia!) As a rationalist (and a Buddhist), I think that natural selection explains things better than intelligent design.
