Wouldn't West Side Story be considered Musical Tragedy? ZTak 23:44, 14 April 2008 (EDT)

I think this page probably aught be moved to "Musical Theater" since there are, at least on modern times, a fair number of Musicals which qualify as Tragedies, Dramas, etc. West Side Story, above, is a perfect example. Use of the term "Musical Comedy" to describe all Musicals is outdated. --Birdie 10:21, 23 July 2008 (EDT)

I liked the article. It said most of the necessary things, and criticism would be nitpicking. On the subject of what to call things, I think there should be a subcategory within "Music" containing the various forms of "music theatre" or whatever you want to call it. Off the top of my head (and on my shelves) there is Grand Opera (Puccini, Verdi, say); Opera Bouffe, (Offenbach) Operetta (G & S, Strauss Lehar), Music Drama (Wagner), Folk Opera (Porgy) , Ballad Opera, (The Beggar's Opera, Hugh the Drover), Musical Theatre, Musical, Light Opera, and so on. Works like Show Boat and West ide Story are ard to pin down within one sub-genr. And when did the early American operettas of Victor Herbert and Sigmund Romberg etc morph into Gershwin and Berlin. And remember that there was a time when London's West End was as productive as Broadway. Just a thought.... Guddle 23:09, 26 July 2008 (EDT)

Move Proposal

I created a Musical theater page and currently have it redirecting here for now. As was suggested above a few years ago, "musical comedy" seems like a genre of musical theater rather than the common name of the art. I'll leave this here for comment for 24 hours and then switch the content from here over to that page and redirect this to there if there is no objection. Let me know.
