Northern Lights & Aurora & Auroral Oval articles merged?

There appear to be similar articles for Northern Lights, Aurora, and Auroral oval. Perhaps these should be merged into a single article with redirects from the other two.

Source for lack of certitude in science?

The current article states "Scientists in the past tended to discount claims of Northern Lights, blaming such stories on drunken sailors, marsh gas, or the planet Venus, but these days the Northern Lights are accepted by the scientific community. This demonstrates the lack of certitude in science."

Is there a source for this statement? Seems a bit suspect to me, since you can generally look up in a clear night sky in winter pretty much anywhere in Northern Europe or Canada and see the Northern Lights. NuclearNeil 23:49, 10 September 2007 (EDT)

I agree with NuclearNeil here. It seems the original author is confusing St. Elmo's fire with the aurora. Since no one has added anything in the last year, I'm going to remove the paragraph entirely and the link to St. Elmo's fire. FrankieBlackie 17:11, 10 September 2008 (EDT)
