Talk:Third Battle of Ypres

The battle was not an complete disaster for the Allies...despite their horrific casualties, the drain on the German war machine was telling. At this stage the war had become one of who would run out of what first. England was starting to starve, but had the colonies, and now USA, supplying it. The Germans were rapidly running out of the food of war...steel and fuel etc. The four months of Passchendale was a greater strain on their war-making capacities than it was to Britain. And it kept the Germans away from the weakened French a little down the line.

Passchendale epitomized all that was wrong with that war. The terrible cost of going almost nowhere. But without that battle, the Americans would have faced a far stronger Germany than it did when its troops arrived not too much later.AlanE 04:30, 22 May 2007 (EDT)
