The Fens
The Fens, also known as The Great Fen and Fenland, is a geographical area of eastern England, stretching from western East Anglia to the far south-east of the Midlands. It mostly consists of areas of the counties Cambridgeshire (north), Lincolnshire (broadly the Parts of Holland) and Norfolk (west), with some peripheral areas being in Huntingdonshire, Northamptonshire and Suffolk. A "fen" is a mainly eastern English dialect word for a marshland. Consisting of the area immediately inland of the Wash, The Fens are a naturally marshy region, which were largely drained starting in the 17th century with the intention to use the land for agriculture. A small number of fens in the region remain undrained, with the largest being Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire.
