The Real McCoys

The Real McCoys is a memorable American situation comedy, often mingled with inspirational themes and moral principles. It starred the Academy Award-winning actor Walter Brennan (1894-1974), along with Richard Crenna (1926-2003), and Kathleen Nolan. The series was co-produced by Marterto Productions, owned by comedian Danny Thomas (1912-1991), and in association with Walter Brennan and Irving Pincus's Westgate Company. Set in the San Fernando Valley in southern California, the series was broadcast from 1957 to 1963, the first five seasons on the ABC Thursday evening schedule and the final year on the CBS Sunday evening schedule.

The Real McCoys is the story of a farm family originally from the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, from a fictional place called Smokey Corners. The McCoys relocated to California to live and work on a farm they inherited from Ben McCoy, brother to patriarch Amos McCoy. The family included Grandpa Amos (Walter Brennan), his grandson Luke (Richard Crenna), Luke's young wife Kate (Kathleen Nolan), Luke's teenage sister Tallahassie "Hassie" (Lydia Reed, born 1944), and his 11-year-old brother "Little Luke" (Michael Winkelman, 1946-1999). Only Crenna appeared in all 225 episodes of the series.

The former West Virginians join the Grange farm association and hired the Puerto Rican Tony Martinez (1920-2002) as the farmhand, Pepino Garcia. The McMichaels, a brother and sister played by Andy Clyde (1892-1967) and Madge Blake (1899-1969), respectively, lived on the hill near the McCoys. Amos McCoy and George McMichael sometimes quarreled over their games of checkers and horseshoes.

Kathleen Nolan left the program in 1962. In the final season on CBS, the show was renamed The McCoys, and it was revealed that Kate had died off-screen, and Luke was a widower.
