Tuscola County was established in 1840 and organized in 1850. The county’s name is thought to derive from a Native American term, with "Tusci" meaning "flat land" and "cola" meaning "level." Early settlers were drawn to the region for its fertile soil and abundant timber resources.
The county developed as an agricultural hub, producing crops such as sugar beets, corn, and soybeans. By the late 19th century, Caro became a center of commerce and government for the region.
Geography
