The "fighting with shovels" comment obviously originated with a Western intelligence analyst & propagandist who read Victor Suvorov's comparison of fighting with a bayonet v. fighting with a foxhole shovel. Suvorov stated his weapon of choice to kill a man with was a foxhole shovel, which many then-Soviet soldiers also sharpened the edges to make it like a bayonet.
