The Ventral tegmentum or Ventral tegmental area is part of the midbrain near the dorsal striatum and Substantia nigra.

The Ventral tegmentum neurons primarily respond to the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. It is thought to play a crucial rule in reinforcement learning particularly as computation of reward prediction and error in prediction. Researchers in neuroscience modeling have used Temporal difference learning to attempt to explain how animals might learn and the role of dopamine and the Ventral tegmentum area.
