Villán de Tordesillas is a municipality and small town in the Province of Valladolid, Castile and León, Spain, with a population of 122 inhabitants (INE 2025). It is located about 30 km southwest of the city of Valladolid, near Tordesillas, in the Tierra del Vino region, an area traditionally linked to viticulture and cereal agriculture with an aging population.[1]
The town has gained media attention for its strong and consistent support for right-wing and far-right political forces, diverging from national trends where PSOE and PP dominate.[2]
Politics
Villán de Tordesillas has historically voted overwhelmingly for right-wing options, often described by residents as a "falangist village" with a deep-rooted conservative culture.[2] In the Castilla y León regional elections of March 15, 2026, with 89 votes cast (83.17% turnout from a census of 107), the results were:
- Vox: 47 votes (52.8%)
- PP: 28 votes (31.46%)
- Falange Española de las JONS: 4 votes (4.49%)
- Se Acabó la Fiesta (SALF, party of Alvise Pérez): 4 votes (4.49%)
- PSOE: 2 votes (2.24%)
- Izquierda Unida: 2 votes (2.24%)
- Others (e.g., MEV): 1 vote (1.1%)
Vox, PP, and Falange together accounted for nearly 90% of the votes, while left-wing parties received only 4 votes total.[2][3]
Residents express pride in this tendency: one neighbor stated, "De Falange de toda la vida" ("Falange all our lives"), while another affirmed they have "esa cultura" (that culture) and find it "perfecto" (perfect).[2] The village has been noted for having a Falange councilor in 2011, the only one in Spain at the time.
The mayor, José Vidal Adalia (PP), and his son Juan (Vox voter) appeared on television explaining the split: in municipal elections, people vote for the person; in regional or national ones, "totalmente a la derecha" (totally to the right).[2] They do not view Falange as far-right, citing past local collaboration, and criticize the PP for shifting away from traditional right-wing positions. The mayor advocates an immediate PP-Vox pact for regional governments, while his son predicts the trend could spread nationally as older PP voters disappear and younger ones, influenced by social media rather than traditional TV, enter the electorate.[2]
A few left-wing voters exist: one resident said, "Seré la única que soy de izquierdas, soy de Pedro" ("I'll be the only one on the left, I'm for Pedro" — referring to PSOE).[2]
Geography
The municipality covers 12.30 km² at an average elevation of 748 meters. It features typical Castilian rural architecture, with a town hall and historic buildings.
