Violeta Chamorro (born 1929) was the 48th president of Nicaragua. She was the first women president in that country and served in office from 1990 until 1997 after defeating Sandinista chief Daniel Ortega who had just opened up the country to free elections. It was a surprising outcome to many who expected Ortega to keep power.
