Walter Bedell Smith

Walter Bedell Smith (October 5, 1895 – August 9, 1961) was a prominent U.S. Army general, diplomat, and intelligence leader, who served as General Dwight D. Eisenhower's chief of staff during World War II. Postwar, Smith served as U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1946–1949), Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (1950–1953) and briefly as Under Secretary of State. He retired from the Army as a four-star general in 1953 and died of a heart attack in 1961.
