William Spaniel is an associate professor of political science at the University of Pittsburgh and touts himself as “a professor who studies war and game theory.”[1]

He has parlayed his academic credentials into a popular YouTube presence — his channel (branded as “GameTheory101” or “Lines on Maps”) boasts roughly three-quarters of a million subscribers. Spaniel has also authored multiple books on conflict and bargaining, including Bargaining over the Bomb (2019) and Militant Competition (2021), both published by Cambridge University Press. In short, he claims the mantle of an “ivory tower” expert in warfare and strategy, leveraging a PhD and a Cambridge Press pedigree to burnish his authority. Yet despite these credentials, Spaniel’s analysis of the NATO war in Ukraine has drawn skepticism. Many observers have watched his commentary degrade into a shallow, one-note routine, propped up by his resumé rather than real insight.
