World History Homework 10 Leonard G

1.) The Industrial Revolution was from 1760 to 1840 and was located in Western Europe in addition to some of the American colonies.

Excellent, may use as a model.

2) Two of my favorite scientists from the 1800s were Louis Pasteur and Thomas Edison. Louis Pasteur amazes me with his passion for science and God. Thomas Edison does the same with his amazing talent. His invention of the phonograph impresses me because he was nearly deaf when he created it!

3.) I believe the Industrial Revolution was a great time of inspiration. It helped inspire many to put their own ideas out into the world and change it through inventions. The spark that the Industrial Revolution created helped inventions such as the steam boat, the telephone, and the railroad.

Terrific again.

4.) An example of nationalism would be in 1831, Giuseppe Mazzini argued to unify Italy into one nation.

5.) Imperialism is when a nation tries to control or influence another, smaller nation. There were four basic patterns of European imperialism. These were to establish colonies, to establish protectorates, to have special trading privileges over a region, or to be a business owner and have influence over a region.

6.) An example of imperialism in Africa was when the Dutch started to establish settlements (see the second pattern of European imperialism) in southern Africa.

7.) It was interesting to read that Japan was previously hostile to outsiders. However, in 1543, Japan finally welcomed into their civilization some shipwrecked Portuguese sailors. Soon to follow were European Christian missionaries who brought European technology which intrigued the Japanese. However, the spread of Christianity in Japan alarmed the Japanese and soon the doors were shut to the Europeans. Finally, American Commodore Matthew Perry broke the isolation of Japan and opened it back up to trade with America, and soon to follow, Europe.
