Yenan (Pinyin: Yan'an) is a small city in Shaanxi province, north-west China. From 1936 to 1948 it was the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party, following the CCP's flight from its bases in southern and central China during the Long March of 1934-35. Following its conquest of China during the Chinese Civil War, the country's communist leaders have at times of crisis called upon the Chinese people to display the 'Yan'an spirit' - that is, one of sacrifice and endurance.
