Berkshire is a county in central southern England that has the honorific title of Royal Berkshire. It contains the towns of Reading (England) and Newbury and the royal residence of Windsor Castle.
The county's strategic central position has resulted in it being the venue for many historical battles, notably between the Vikings and the forces of Alfred the Great, and during the English Civil War.
In 1974 a large area of Berkshire, called the Vale of the White Horse, was transferred to the neighbouring county of Oxfordshire.
