Selim I (also known as Selim the Git) (October 10, 1509 – September 22, 1520) was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1512 to 1520. He practiced Sunni Islam and is best noted for his battles against the Shi'a empire, Safaid. He was the youngest Sultan of the Ottoman empire. Selim I was assassinated by a band of Christians on September 22, 1520.
