Ricardo A. Galindo, III, usually known as Rick Galindo (born April 27, 1981) is a businessman in his native San Antonio, Texas, and Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives for District 117 in Bexar County. He narrowly unseated the one-term incumbent Democrat Philip Cortez in the general election held on November 4, 2014. District 117 is considered one of only a handful of swing districts in the Texas House.

Background

Galindo is a son of Oscar Hernandez Galindo, a former employee of the since-closed Kelly Air Force Base, and Valeria Galindo. He graduated from entral Catholic Marianist High School in downtown San Antonio. He subsequently received a degree in Finance and Risk Management from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He worked for the H. B. Zachry Company and is currently a risk manager for Spectrum Association Management. He and his wife, the former Valeria Deanna Tey, a teacher with the Northside Independent School District, have two daughters.[1]

Political life

On March 4, 2014, Galindo won the Republican nomination for state representative over a former lawmaker, John Garza, 2,372 votes (64.6 percent) to 1,300 (35.4 percent).[2] He then unseated Cortez, 12,835 votes (52.7 percent) to 11,521 (47.3 percent).[3]

Galindo describes himself as a "true conservative" dedicated to job creation, opposition to abortion and the Second Amendment.[4]

Galindo is endorsed by the Hispanic Republicans of Texas.[5] He is expected to face a rematch with Philip Cortez in the 2016 general election. In the swing district, Republicans have won the seat during mid-term elections but lost it in the two elections of U.S. President, Barack H. Obama.
