The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was brutally suppressed by the communist Soviet Union on November 4th of that year, massacring thousands and causing nearly a quarter-million people to flee the country.[1]

Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty was released from jail by the freedom fights, but was then compelled to flee to the U.S. Embassy to avoid capture and imprisonment by the communists. He was not allowed to leave for roughly two decades, lest he be imprisoned further by the communists.
