John Charles Milkovich (born May 1957)[1] is an attorney in Shreveport, Louisiana, who is an incoming Democrat member of the Louisiana State Senate. On January 11, 2016, he succeeds the term-limited District 38 Republican Sherri Smith Cheek Buffington, who completes three terms in the chamber.
Milkovich won the general election on November 21, 2015, when he defeated the Republican Richard Burford of DeSoto Parish, a departing member of the Louisiana House of Representatives. Milkovich led with 15,665 votes (52.4 percent) to Burford's 14,206 (47.6 percent).[2] In his campaign, Milkovich advocated strong conservative social and economic positions in sharp contrast to his party.[3] These positions caused many outside his district to think that he is a Republican.
In 2008, Milkovich was an unsuccessful candidate for Louisiana's 4th congressional district seat; he lost the Democratic nomination to then Caddo Parish District Attorney Paul Carmouche, who in turn was narrowly defeated by Republican John Fleming, a physician from Minden in Webster Parish. In the year 2008 only, Louisiana used a regular closed primary process for its congressional elections.
A native of Roundup, Montana, Milkovich work on cattle ranches and in roofing and painting. He attended the University of Chicago and graduated in 1979 from the University of Montana in Missoula and thereafter the Louisiana State University Law Center in Baton Rouge. He claims to have been committed to "working families" for more than a quarter century.[3] He and his wife, Carola, whom he wed in 1985, have a daughter, Sarah; the couple resides in Keithville in south Caddo Parish. He is an active member of the First Assembly of God Church in Shreveport under the prominent pastor Denny Duron. He has worked in Sunday school and the prison ministry.[4]
