Shigellosis is any condition caused by infection with organisms of the genus Shigella, such as bacillary dysentery.[1] Shigellosis produces intestinal pain and diarrhea with mucus and blood in the stool.[2] Shigellosis is particularly common in tropical countries, but frequently occurs in other places as well. Shigellosis is particularly hazardous for individuals with AIDS or other immunodeficiency states. [3]
