-The town is one of the most important historical locations of The Industrial Revolution, being the birthplace of Charles Rawlidge, butler to [[Isambard Kingdom Brunel]] (1806 - 1859). It was Rawlidge who became Brunel's confidant during many times of crisis, allowing Brunel to complete many projects he may otherwise have given up on. Brunel created and named The Rawlidge Viaduct in Lewisham, South East London in his honor after his butler's death in 1849.
