Oros Athos (Greek: Όρος Άθως, literally: Mount Athos) is a peninsula in the northeast of Greece, a little south of Thessaloniki. The semiautonomous Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain, which is home of 20 orthodox monasteries, is located on the peninsula, the capital is Karyaes or Kariaí. At the south end rises the 2033 metres high Mount Athos, the peninsula is named after the mountain. Women are not allowed on the peninsula.[1]
