William Cooper Nell (December 16, 1816 – May 25, 1874) was a black American historian who wrote The Colored Patriots of the American Revolution.
Life and Works
He was born December 16, 1816, and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, where he knew segregation and activism since birth.[1] In 1851, he became an assistant to Frederick Douglass, and later published his "Colored American Patriots" pamphlet (with preface by Harriet Beecher Stowe), about the blacks of the American Revolution such as Crispus Attucks of the Boston massacre.[2]
