Omar Mateen (November 16, 1986 – June 12, 2016) was an American Muslim of Afghan descent, He killed 49 people and wounded 53 in what was then the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter in American history. The shooting occurred on June 12, 2016 at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Although Mateen's choice of a nightclub that caters to homosexuals triggered a great deal of speculation and controversy, it does not appear that he selected the club for this reason. He found the club by googling the search term "Orlando night clubs."[1] Mateen was born in New Hyde Park, New York, of Afghan parents. During the shooting, he called 911 to pledged his allegiance to the ISIS terror group.[2] In 2006, Mateen had registered as a Democrat.[3]
