Revision as of 17:21, July 21, 2018

The Golden State Warriors are a National Basketball Association team based in Oakland, California.

Originally founded as the Philadelphia Warriors in 1946 as a charter member of the Basketball Association of America (the predecessor to the NBA), they were best known as the team who drafted Wilt Chamberlain (who would score a record 100 points in a single game). The team relocated to San Francisco in 1962, adopting the name San Francisco Warriors before relocating to Oakland in 1971 and adopting their current name (they are the only major professional sports franchise to name its team after a state nickname).

The team will relocate to a new arena in San Francisco in 2019, but the team will maintain its current name.
