"Churchian" is a slang term used to describe someone who attends church, but who is not perceived to be a 'true' Christian. A churchian might attend church because of family, tradition or a desire to appear moral or virtuous, but is unlikely to apply Christian teachings to their life outside church. A churchian may pay lip service to Christian morality but live a lifestyle condemned by Scripture or hold up others who do so as good Christian role models; a churchian's understanding of Christian morality may come from only a few cherry-picked Bible verses or may be completely unmoored from Scripture. A churchian's Christian witness is at best worthless and may even be damaging by portraying Christianity negatively. The sham Christianity practiced by churchians is called churchianity.[1]
Churchians have a Biblical precedent in the Pharisees whom Jesus reproved for making a great show of their charitable giving to hide the true nature of their ungodly lives (see Matthew 6:1-6 ).
