Alana Rose Mastrangelo is a former political activist, who served as a Regional Director at the youth organization Turning Point USA, from January 2016 to October 2018. She is currently a reporter at Breitbart News.
Mastrangelo was born on May 9, 1988[1] of Italian-American parents in Cleveland, Ohio. Her father is from the Province of Campobasso, and her mother is from the Province of Isernia. Mastrangelo holds dual citizenship in both the United States and Italy.
Mastrangelo received her undergraduate degree from John Carroll University, where she studied politics and history.
In 2015, Mastrangelo ran for Willoughby Hills City Council,[2] and although she was in Italy during most of the campaign, Mastrangelo promptly returned to the United States sixty days before the election, at which point she then accused her opponent of "pretending to own a business"[3] and using local government to facilitate "nepotism."[4]
In 2016, Mastrangelo assisted in the creation of Professor Watchlist, a website by Turning Point USA that lists U.S. professors deemed to "discriminate against conservative students, promote anti-American values and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom."[5] After its launch, the website was criticized by members of academia, who claimed its purpose was to threaten professors.[6][7] Mastrangelo reacted by defending the watchlist, stating that the website is "helpful" for conservative students who want to "know if a professor has actually made headlines for past behavior,"[8] before signing up for classes.
In February 2017, a leaked audio recording revealed Mastrangelo discussing plans to funnel thousands of dollars into student government campaigns at Ohio State University.[9] In the recording, Mastrangelo could be heard talking about how Turning Point USA would run seemingly liberal students, who were actually "closet conservatives," for student government. Mastrangelo referred to the plan as "a Trojan Horse."[10]
In August 2018, Mastrangelo criticized New York governor Andrew Cuomo on the show Fox and Friends, calling his recent comments "asinine" and stating that as a descendant of Italian immigrants, Cuomo "should know better"[11] than to make disparaging remarks about America.
