The Assyrians were the people who invaded Mesopotamia and took Babylon in 1000 BC. They established their capital at Nineveh.
Modern Usage
Assyrian also refers to an ethnic group originating in Central Asia. They are a Christian minority, practicing Eastern Rite Catholicism, and speaking a language called "Assyrian" or "Syriac", a descendant of Aramaic. Large Assyrian communities can be found in Chicago and Southern California.
