A strawman argument is a weakened version of a debating opponent's argument, which lacks the potency of the opponent's actual argument. In debates attended by the unwary, a clever but unscrupulous debater can fool the audience into thinking that the opponent's position has been disproved. Knocking down the powerless straw man takes the place of an authentic contest with the real man.

An example of an atheist committing the strawman fallacy can be found in the Quora question "How do flat-Earthers explain Magellan." Quora atheist Lou Pettymore answered the question with:
  −
I predict they will trot out the cut&paste they call science, and claim:
  −
  −
He was a stooge for NASA
  −
    He used CGI
  −
He was possessed by the Devil and lied
  −
Trust that the Bible and Ken Ham will be involved in their answer in some way.
  −
Coury Koutz then commented, bringing up the fact that neither the Bible nor Ken Ham agree with a flat Earth. Lou replied by creating a false stereotype involving Christians and flat-Earthers. Coury then brought up several facts of history (eg. Christians who aren't flat-Earthers and flat-Earthers who aren't Christians), therefore disproving Lou's stereotype. Lou then strawmans Coury's disproval of the stereotype into a claim that there are no Christian flat-Earthers and tells him to debate who flat-Earthers on Quora, Steve Martin and Joseph Nazzaro. Lou also repeats the stereotype. Coury calls out the stereotype and strawman, while Lou just repeats the stereotype and strawman. Lou also ends up committing ad hominem, the appeal to shame type of ad baculum, hasty generalization, cherrypicking, and non-sequitur. <ref>https://www.quora.com/How-do-flat-Earthers-explain-Magellan/answer/Lou-Pettymore</ref> Coury later discovered that Steve Martin was, in fact, not a flat-Earther, meaning that Lou lied.<ref>https://www.quora.com/How-did-so-many-other-creatures-survive-the-asteroid-impact-that-completely-killed-all-the-dinosaurs/answer/Steve-Martin-325</ref>
