John David Dingell, Jr. (born July 8, 1926 – February 7, 2019) was the Democrat U.S. representative for Michigan's current 12th congressional district, which includes Monroe County, parts of Washtenaw County and Wayne County, and the southwest suburbs of Detroit, from 1995 to 2015. Taking the seat that his father held before him, Dingell was the longest the third longest serving House member ever.
Dingell voted with a majority of his Democrat colleagues 98.2% of the time at one point in Congress.[1] He voted against authorizing military force in Iraq and stated he was not against Hezbollah.[2] He supported liberals on education, energy, the environment, and government-run health care. Some of Dingell's stances were conservative-leaning; he strongly opposes gun control and received a 100% rating from the National Rifle Association, and voted to ban partial birth abortion.
In August 2009, Dingell compared opponents of Obamacare to the Ku Klux Klan (an organization that was created by Democrats).[3]
