Ptolemy from whence the name comes, was an astronemer who used astronomical events to create a list of kings and dates of their reign from Assyrian times through the successors of Alexander.
While it is considered to be a 'go-to' text regarding the history of this period, it is also considered to be not absolutely perfect, but essentially correct. For example it does not contain:
- Neriglissar's accepted successor Labashi-Marduk (which is on the Uruk King List)
- the debated Cyaxares II (which is not on the Uruk King List)
- the accepted Magi False Smerdis (which is not on the Uruk King List).
