Maria Elvira Salazar, born November 1, 1961 (age 65), is a Miami television journalist currently serving as the U.S. representative for Florida's 27th congressional district in the House of Representatives. She was elected in 2020, defeating Democrat Donna Shalala in a major upset.[1] She previously lost to Shalala in the 2018 Midterms in her bid then to replace retiring RINO Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
United States House of Representatives
2018 election
After longtime RINO Ileana Ros-Lehtinen announced in late April 2017 that she would retire rather than seek re-election in the 2018 Midterms,[2] Elvira Salazar declared her run for the open seat. The district was carried by Hillary Clinton in the 2016 U.S. presidential election by a twenty-point margin.[3]
Elvira Salazar won the Republican primary to face Democrat nominee Donna Shalala, a former president of the corrupt Clinton Foundation, in the general election.[4] While backed by Ros-Lehtinen, who was popular in the majority-Hispanic district, she lost in what was expected to be a likely flip for the Democratic Party.[5]
2020 election
Elvira Salazar announced in August 2019 her run against incumbent Rep. Shalala in the 2020 elections.[6] She easily won the Republican primary to face the former Clinton crony in the general election.[7] Several "expert" election ratings sites including the Cook Political Report rated the race as "Likely Democrat".[8]
