The Battle of Nájara (also called Navarette) was fought near Burgos in northern Spain on 3 April 1367, between forces led by Edward the Black Prince and Pedro the Cruel on one side and Henry of Trastamara (Pedro’s half-brother) on the other.
The prize was the crown of Castile, previously usurped by Henry from Pedro. The battle was a resounding success for the prince, and adds to his status as the pre-eminent battle-commander of the age.
In historic terms the battle did little. Within two years, with French assistance, Henry had regained the throne. Edward stayed out of it this time – he was busy reorganising the finances of his principality (Aquitaine), raising taxes, due to Pedro having reneged on payment for his previous assistance.
