The site believed to be the ruins of the City of Jericho described in the Bible has been excavated several times.  Its first excavation was done in 1868, but it was not scientifically excavated until 1907. The first series of excavations, conducted by archaeologists who hoped to prove the story found in the Bible to be true, failed to confirm the Biblical story of Jericho—it instead revealed that the city was unoccupied at the time the Israelites would have been invading.  A second excavation, conducted between the years of 1930 and 1936, appeared to show the city was occupied at the time of the Israeli movement into the area, but this finding was based on methodology considered crude by today’s standards.  A third and highly scientific dig was conducted between 1952 and 1958, this dig supported the findings of the first scientific excavation, that Jericho was unoccupied during the Biblical time period.  The most recent excavation, has again cast doubt on the findings of the first and third digs, suggesting that Jericho was in fact occupied during the Biblical time frame.
