Regionalism was a new movement in art during the Great Depression in the Midwest, developed by Grant Wood (1891-1942) and including Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975).
Grant Wood's painting the American Gothic is considered to be America's most famous work of art and is the leading example of Regionalism. It depicts the reality of a determined farmer, and captures his spirit.
Regionalism is intentionally devoid of any European influence.
