Tommy Hitchcock (Jr.) (d.1944) is considered the greatest polo player of all-time, who thrived during its golden era prior to World War II. He was also the inspiration for the oafish Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby].
Hitchcock was more aggressive than others in the traditionally gentlemanly sport of polo, often using a charging maneuver that is penalized today.[1]
