Nicholas Joseph Muscarello, Jr., known as Nicky Muscarello (born July 2, 1974),[1] is an attorney in Hammond, Louisiana, who is a Republican state representative for District 86 in Tangipahoa Parish east of Baton Rouge. He won the 2018 special election over fellow Republican David Philip Vial (born July 2, 1952), also from Hammond,[2] 2,524 (53 percent) to 2,279 (47 percent) in a turnout of just over 19 percent of registered voters.[3] Both candidates have July 2 birthdays.

Muscarello is one of the few Republicans in the nation to hold a state legislative seat for his party since the inauguration in 2017 of U.S. President Donald Trump.

A Hammond native, Muscarello graduated from the Roman Catholic St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School and Southeastern Louisiana University, both in Hammond. Muscarello, who is white, received his Juris Doctorate from the historically black Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge. Prior to the establishment of his law practice, Muscarello was hired by the Indigent Defender Board for the 21st Judicial District Court, which encompasses Tangipahoa, Livingston, and St. Helena parishes. In that position, he handled hundreds of cases and participated in multiple jury trials.[4]

Muscarello resides in the village of Tickfaw.

In another special election held on March 24, 2018, in District 93, the African-American lawyer Royce Duplessis, a Democrat, won 72 percent of the vote for the position vacated by Helena Moreno, who was instead elected in 2017 to the New Orleans City Council.
