Eric Leroy Adams was elected mayor of New York City as a Democrat. The last Republican elected mayor of New York in response to a Democrat mega-crime wave was in 1994.

Adams is a retired police captain and Brooklyn borough president. In the 2021 New York City Democrat mayoral primary, Adams allegeldy dismissed calls to defund the police.[2]
