Upon entering Berezhany, the Germans occupied the new gymnasium as an administrative building, and our classes were moved to the old traditional place - the second floor of the town hall.

A new "liberator" of the Ukrainian people, Fuhrer Hitler, reigned over the Berezhany land. Portraits of Hitler in a long overcoat with a raised kovnir wrapping around a formidable face with small mustaches artificially attached under a pointed nose, and with the inscription "Hitler the Liberator" hung in every class. The Führer immediately showed his plans for Ukraine by abolishing the provisional Ukrainian government in Lviv and imprisoning Ukrainian leaders in concentration camps.
