Thanks for discussing the recent decision by Jackson County, Missouri, residents NOT to continue paying additional sales taxes for wealthy sports owners. Add to that the mayor of Las Vegas essentially not caring when (or even if) the Oakland A's relocate there, and you may be seeing a trend.
The lack of interest in sports has even gone down to the high school level. In football-crazy Texas, the voters of a wealthy school district voted NOT to build a new fancy football stadium (they did, however, vote to build a fine arts building), while other similar projects - even those which would have merely renovated existing facilities which were reaching end of useful life - were defeated elsewhere.
