The slogan America First has been a conservative theme for many decades, and was championed by Pat Buchanan in the 1990s based on his campaigns of American nationalism, strict immigration controls, anti-interventionist foreign policies, and no perpetual wars.
Donald Trump picked up on this theme in his presidential campaigns, evoking a brand of patriotism echoing the foreign policy of previous greats such as George Washington and John Quincy Adams. Danny Toma wrote:
