The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado. The Avalance were founded as the Quebec Nordiques (a french word meaning "Northerner") but moved to Denver in 1995, because Quebec City had a small population, had close proximity to the larger, more popular team in Montreal and the higherNHL salaries. In the1995-96 season immediately after the move the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup and would win again in 2000-01. Until the 2006-07 Season the Avalanche did not miss the NHL Playoffs. The Avalanche play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference at the Pepsi Center.
