The Man in the Iron Mask (c. 1640 - November 19, 1703) was a prisoner in France from 1669 until his death in November 1703. He always wore a mask to hide his identity. Although historical evidence indicates that mask may have never been anything other than black velvet, the legend now indicates that it was constructed of iron.[1] Although his arrest warrant listed his name as "Eustache Dauger," it is unlikely that was his real name.
This legend inspired the 1998 film, The Man in the Iron Mask, which adds a significant spin to the story.[2]
