Oil is a viscous liquid that is not soluble in water and which is used for mainly for lubrication and fuel.
There are two main types of oil. One is derived from plants, such as olives, and the other is obtained from geological sources, generally believed to be the remains of buried plant or animal material.
Uses
Uses of oil include the following:
- Heating, by burning the oil.
- Illumination, in oil lamps.
- Generation of electricity, by burning the oil to turn water to steam used to run generators.
- Lubrication.
- Anointing.
- Manufacture of perfumes.
- Cooking, to moisten the food and to improve heat transfer.
Oil in the Bible
Oil appears over two hundred times in the Bible.
Oil, particularly olive oil, is used in drink offerings to God, but not in sin offerings.[1]
Oil is used for anointing the priests of God by pouring it on their heads. This sanctifies them and makes them holy[2]
Oil is used for lighting lamps.[3]
New kings of Israel were anointed with oil.[4]
In a miracle, Elisha allowed a widow to fill all of her pots, and her neighbor's pots, with oil.[5]
As the twenty-third Psalm says: Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
