The Illuminati are a subversive Masonic organization, allegedly founded in Bavaria, Germany by Adam Weishaupt in the 1700s. Their goal is to take over Europe (and the rest of the world) and establish a one-world government, while abolishing religion. The name means "Enlightened Ones", and refers to their belief in super-human knowledge which makes them better-suited to rule the world than the "Normals".
The Illuminati's symbol, the Eye in the Pyramid appears on the back of the US one-Dollar bill, leading theorists to suspect some of the Founding Fathers of being Illuminati operatives or sympathizers. Many of the Founders were Masons, so it's possible some of them could have been Illuminati initiates.
