The Russian Federation (Russian: Российская Федерация, Rossiyskaya Federatsiya), commonly referred to as "Russia", is the largest of the earth's countries (17,075,200 square kilometers) and has the sixth largest population. Russia is a federation, consisting of a number of constituent entities. Nonetheless, the centralized government is relatively strong, led by President Vladimir Putin, who has nationalized the nation's energy companies and has been accused of bringing autocratic, anti-democratic tendencies to office. The capital of Russia is Moscow.
Russia has only been conquered once in the winter, by the famous Mongol Ghengis Khan. Hitler, Napoleon and many other famous military geniuses have tried to conquer it during the winter but all failed. This phenomenon is known as General Winter. Germany in World War I did declare peace with Russia in a treaty favorable to the Germans (often considered to be humiliating to Russia) at the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, but did not actually conquer the country.
The Russian Federation is a successor state to the Soviet Union. Boris Yeltsin was the first President of Russia after Communism was removed and the nation of Russia re-established. After years of economic difficulties after that break up of the Soviet Union and a return to a partial market economy, Russia has had 6.7% growth per year on average from 1998 to 2006, the last year of statistics.
