Shigellosis is any condition caused by infection with organisms of the genus Shigella, such as bacillarydysentery.[1] Shigellosis produces intestinal pain and diarrhea with mucus and blood in the stool.[2] Shigellosis is particularly common in tropical countries, but frequently occurs in other places as well. It is particularly hazardous for people with AIDS or other immunodeficiency states. [3] Shigellosis is one of the maladies of gay bowel syndrome.
