A civil union is a recognized relationship in some jursidictions between two same-sex people who "live together".
The intent of civil unions is to give same-sex couples the same legal privileges and social standing as married couples. Indeed, in states or municipalities where this takes place, it effectively elevates the legal standing of unmarried homosexuals above those of unmarried heterosexual couples.
