Merry is one of the four hobbits of the Fellowship of the Ring, along with Frodo, Sam, and Pippin. Merry is more honest and courageous than Pippin, although it was Pippin who befriended Treebeard, without whose help Aragorn would surely have died at Helm's Deep. Like Pippin, Merry became a king's squire, serving Theoden and accompanying a Rider of Rohan to the decisive battle in which the greatest of the Nine Riders was killed by Eowyn.
